So sorry to everyone who has e-mailed and asked about BUILD! I have had such a busy and exciting first 6 weeks of school! Here is an entire post dedicated to everything I know about BUILD. Please feel free to leave me a message asking any questions. Thanks for your interest!
Thanks to some fabulous ladies that work in the Math department at my district (Cindy and Melissa!), we have a fan.tast.ic math workshop plan to implement in our classrooms!
In case you haven't already gathered, it is called BUILD.
This is like the Daily 5 is for reading. You spend time building stamina and independence for each station.
Buddy Games
This is where I put games that my kiddos have practice practice practiced multiple times. They know the expectations: whisper voice, play the right way, play the whole time. My school uses Investigations as our math curriculum, so this goes perfectly b/c the basis of the curriculum is them playing games to master math skills.
Using Manipulatives
This is where I put manipulatives for exploration. For the first few weeks of school I have had pattern blocks and workmats. You could also put play money, Judy Clocks, unifix cubes.
Independent Reading/Work
The title on this one pretty much explains it. My kiddos read math books during this time- and amazingly they really like it. Seemingly way more than Read to Self during Literacy stations. This is where you could also have them working on something pencil and paper if you need them to.
Learning About Numbers
For this one I have hundreds chart games, matching, number scrolls, student made books about numbers.
Doing Math
This is where I put a game when we first learn it. After they have played it on their own a good amount of times and I have made sure that the majority of the class knows how to play- then I move it to Buddy Games.
The way it works is that the students go to 2 BUILD rotations a day. So, in a five day week, they go to each one twice. I use a spreadsheet and the students check in with me before we do each rotation to tell me what they want to do. Sometime I have to override it, but they don't seem to mind too much. I usually see a small group during each rotation. Normally it is the same small groups each day, so that means that most weeks they do each letter only once in a week. That doesn't bother me becasuse they are with me for roughly an hour and 15 minutes a week in a small math group getting individualized attention.
Here is the spreadsheet I use for check-in. I take a different color highlighter each day and highlight their choice during check-in.
{click the link to download}
I have seen others do it where they have the spreadsheet with a day of the week at the top and they right in what the student chooses, but that didn't work for me.
Math stations is the quietest, most on task part of the day in my classroom thanks to BUILD. I love it!
I hope this helps! :)
U may have given me the answer I have been looking for! I have been doing stations (4) a day. I am at one of the stations . we have modeled, practiced, ect. but still not happy with how its running. I am hoping to try BUILD with success!
ReplyDeleteHow long are they at each station?
ReplyDeleteWe do 2 stations a day and each station can last for however long I need it to, depending on the group I have pulled and how long their reteaching lesson needs to take. Sometimes it is a 10 minute station and sometimes it is up to 20 minutes. It depends also on how engaged your kiddos are. Sometimes I might be done with a small group and have them go to a station right then because the rest of the class is still loving what they are doing. Thanks for asking! :)
ReplyDeleteFound this via Pinterest! Love it! I am a Daily 5 gal and having each part of literacy block mean something to them has changed their concentration tremendously! We have a routine est this year already, but i could def see making some changes to incorporate BUILD. AWEsome!

Wow...I love this. I want to implement this in January since we only have 5 more days to go before break. What kind of games or where did you get games to put in each tub?
ReplyDeleteMy team uses Investigations Math. Have you heard of it? The whole idea of it is that students play games to master concepts. I get 99% of my games from there.
ReplyDeleteYou could do domino addition, counters in a cup (you start with 12 counters, 1 partner puts some of them in a cup and the other partner has to say how many are in the cup based on how many are NOT in the cup), roll and record (roll two dice, add them up, write the answer on a graph of possible answers), five in a row (roll two dice, add them up, cover up the answer on a bingo game board of possible answers), missing numbers (have a hundred chart and counters, one partner covers up 10 different numbers and the other partner has to say which numbers are covered up).
Hope this helps!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteOh My Little Classity Class
I love this idea! Thanks for taking the time to explain it.

I am doing Daily 5 literacy stations and would really love to start BUILD during my math block! Can't wait! Thank you for all the details! =)
ReplyDeleteHow did you make the BUILD posters for the crates and wall? My room is jungle theme. This would look great for my math stations. Thanks in advance.
ReplyDeleteI actually just printed out the letters on plain white computer paper and then glue them onto animal print paper from Hobby Lobby. And then I laminated them! They are so pretty :) And now I actually only use the ones on the buckets, not the ones on the wall.
DeleteHappy BUILDing! :)
I love BUILD centers. I found this on Pinterest and started using it with Math and I just started using BUILD in reading too...since they were familiar with the letters. It has truly changed how I do centers! I wish that we did investigations in our county.
ReplyDeleteI can't get your checksheet to print off or download. Would you be willing to send me a copy of it to dixiechick76108@yahoo.com? Thanks
ReplyDeleteAll you is click File, Download As, PDF. Then it will ask you if you would like to Open it or Save it.
DeleteI would email it to you but I am on my phone right now. Thanks for reading! :)

I love your post! It looks fantastic. How long do you do this for and how often do you rotate your materials? Also, do you only allow a certain number of students with each basket? And, how many items do you put in a basket at a time for the kids to choose from?
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Where did you get your baskets? I've been looking all over for some just like those!
ReplyDeleteDo you do whole group? If so for how long?
ReplyDeleteI also have been looking for baskets like those.... can you please share where you got those baskets. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteNot sure where she got them but check Target. I got some like that there at the beginning of the year.
DeleteI love this too!! Thanks for posting and being so detailed!! My math stations are a joke this year... being a first year teacher made everything so much more chaotic. I really like the way you have this set up!!
ReplyDeleteMarvelous Multiagers!
I also use Investigations and am wondering how you fit this in? Is it a separate part of the day than your hour long Investigations lesson? I love this idea to help get in extra practice just wondering about the logistics. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteDo you know if the BUILD concept is copyrighted? I wanted to use this in my classroom and even began setting them up. My principal said to make sure that it isn't copyrighted before I do so.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to use BUILD at school as well. I began to implement it but my principal wants to know if it is copyrighted, where it came from, etc. before I could implement it. Do you have any of this information?
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. I want to have my MATH time involve stations and movement. Thanks for sharing this...I'm hoping to incorporate this idea for the FALL.

How do you introduce the concept of BUILD to your students? Do you tell your students, "Today we will begin five centers and this will be called 'Build'?" In other words, how do you interest your students in liking this concept? I think this is a great idea! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI would also be interested in knowing how you introduce this concept to your students. I am a new teacher (starting NEXT year!!) and LOVE LOVE LOVE this concept... And (per previous comments) barring any copyright issues, I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to implement this in my classroom! =)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing this, and for all the detail and work you put into it. I just recently found you via Pinterest, and am having SO much fun exploring your site! =)

Love the idea of BUILD. Saw it on Pinterest. Where do the students go to complete the BUILD activities? Do you time the rotations by how long your group needs?
ReplyDeleteFabulous idea!! I will be doing this next school year!! Thank you
ReplyDeleteI do the Daily Five in Kindergarten and have found that I needed to do some adjusting. What sort of changes has anyone/would anyone make in a kindergarten classroom. This idea makes me excited about math again!
ReplyDeleteIn a K classroom you would just focus more on number sense and number recognition.
DeleteI love this idea? What is Daily 5 for reading?
ReplyDeleteIt is a way to manage your class' independence level to allow time for pullling small groups.
DeleteCan I say I just love you for posting this! This has helped me in so many ways! Thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteI love it!!! I am so excited to give this a go next year when I start teaching.

Are you able to use this for first grade as well? I am a first year first grade teacher and I am trying to find ideas/sites/ etc for differentiated workshop ideas. Any help would be great ladies! Thank you
ReplyDeleteI teach first grade so you can use BUILD in first grade.
DeleteCan BUILD be used in the intermediate grades or does it only work in the primary grades? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this because I use Daily 5 and this year, we are beginning guided math and BUILD seems like something that may be useful in a guided math program. Looking forward to hearing from you!
ReplyDeleteI'm also interested in those baskets. They look a tad bigger than the Target baskets. Where did you get them???
ReplyDeleteThose are the ones from Target- I love them! They are the perfect size. I have seen a few of them around recently, but not many.
ReplyDeleteI have a question about how the games are organized in the baskets. Do you have them in Ziplocs so the kids can just grab a bag and go? Or do they know which materials they need for each game and get them independently?
ReplyDeleteEverything they need for a game is in a 2 gal ziplock. (game board, dice, counters, etc.) The only thing they might have to get is a dry erase marker and I keep those separate bc sometimes we need them for whole group and I don't want to have to dig them out. Thanks for looking at my blog and commenting :)
DeleteI love this... I can't wait to try it for this coming school year. I have been wanting to start the daily 5 as well, however, I think it would be nice to use BUILD for both as they will then be familiar with what each letter is... Thank you so much for posting all this information!
ReplyDeleteI love this and can not wait to use this. Thank you. Tana
ReplyDeleteIf everyone is in centers for math when do you actually teach the whole class the math lesson for the day?
ReplyDeleteI love it and I am going to start it next week. Thank you for posting.
ReplyDeleteYou said you did some training on BUILD. Was this just given at your school? My second grade team and I want to try and implement this into our math intervention time. We currently do Daily 5 and our kiddos are awesome at it. Where do you get all of your things for each center? We also use investigations.
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteYour post is too good and I liked it so much.Different features about teaching is nice and I very much liked your Buddy Game blog.
Thankyou for sharing.
Regards
Abacus
Thanks for sharing - looks great! Just wondering what you actually have IN the baskets? I have heaps of activities for math centres, but lots of them don't really fit in the baskets (like what you have on the shelf below your baskets). How does this work for you?
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! I have been wondering what BUILD was and this was thorough and easy to understand :) I will definitely be using this in my class!
ReplyDeleteWould this approach be appropriate for students in the special education setting? I have my general education teaching credentials. However, I'm completing my special education credentials. I am using Math-u-See and am wondering if the BUILD might be a way to create more interest and interaction during math time.
ReplyDeleteSo, do you see each group one a day to teach the lesson?
ReplyDeleteHow do you incorporate the direct instruction math lesson with the centers?
ReplyDeleteHey , its really a great idea about teaching. Its good to take such new steps in teaching rather than old traditional steps.

hello... Awesum Ideas!!! I m starting My Maths workshop for kids between 6-10 yrs age group. Hope the BUILD technique helps.. First time.. hence a little nervous
ReplyDeleteHow do you fit this in with investigations? Do you still teach the whole group lesson and then send students to these centers and then come back together for the discussion? I use investigations too and was wondering how you fit it all in? What is your time length for this block? Thanks so much!!
