Many of you might have seen my post on my math small groups/centers. If you haven't, you can see that post here.
Today I am posting about the activities that I have in each bucket. A lot of them I got from our Math series: Investigations. (I went to a 5 day training over Investigations over the summer, and it literally took me 3 days to grasp the concept that is a LOT of game-playing for the kids. More on that here.) Some of the ideas I have gotten from Pinterest and some I *think* I came up with on my own, but with all of the ideas I see on your wonderful blogs + Pinterest, it is hard to keep track of what was inspired and what was original (which is one of the many reasons I choose not to sell anything and why I hardly buy anything).
Keep reading for a breakdown of what is currently in my BUILD buckets for math centers/stations/whatever :)
B- Five in a Row (Addition), Counters in a Cup, Compare Dots
(not pictured: Counting money game, telling time game)
U- Fill the Hexagons, Pegboards
(not pictured: play money and coin flashcards, Judy Clock and time flashcards)

I- Math Books
L- Domino addition with mat, Staircases with Unifix Cubes, Addition Puzzles
(not pictured: Odd/Even gameboard)
D- Roll and Record (Subtraction), Five in a Row (Subtraction), Collect 20
(not pictured: addition and subtraction flashcards)
I have also included the posters I used for my buckets (just print and then glue onto your choice of themed paper and laminate). Click the pics to download.
Also: my BUILD check in sheet. You can edit this to suit your needs. I cross the letter off when the student goes to it so that I know they aren't always choosing the same thing. I also use a different color for each day so I know they don't do something twice in 1 day.
Please feel free to ask me questions about anything regarding BUILD! I highly recommend using it- it is such a great tool!

BUILD sounds awesome. I always struggle with trying to set up math centers. Definitely want to try this next year and already have shared with colleagues.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the ideas.

P.S.I was not able to download " 5 in a row Addition."
Hey Gina, sorry about that! I have fixed the link and you can go download it now!
DeleteHi Mrs. Thompson!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea for BUILD, it's just like Daily 5 Math! Question regarding your BUILD bins. How often do you change the bins and for the items you put inside of them you are selecting items from all the different strands (areas) in Math? When you are working with a group of students you are focusing on one specific area in the curriculum? Would you mind sending me (mazepa_head@Hotmail.com) a copy of your Math year plan so that I could get an idea of your organization?
Thank you for your help!
Sara
This is so AMAZING!! Thank you for all of your ideas and information! I can't wait for school to start so my students can have a great math time!!
ReplyDeleteReally like this math rotation system. I plan on using it this year and adding my computer center to the U - use manipulative.
ReplyDeleteABC Ya! has wonderful math.
Thanks again for the additional information.

I'm so glad I found this tonight. We had an in-service today on Investigations and as a special education teacher, I really wanted to set up math centers of some sort because I have a lot of different levels and not a lot of time. I've decided to group my kids into 2 groups and teach 1st grade investigations to one group while the other is doing BUILD and then switch and teach 5th grade investigations while the 1st grade level kids (really 4th graders) are doing BUILD. I was wondering if you have an outline of your weekly BUILD centers based on where you are in the Investigations book. Do you switch centers weekly?
